Surface Design Process by Lucy Kagan.jpg

WHAT I DO

As an illustrator and print & pattern designer, I juggle a lot of plates. In my commercial surface design and illustration work, I focus in novelty, floral, and children's/youth design. I started my career in apparel print at Anthropologie and moved on to work in bedding design at Martha Stewart for three and a half years, until this past couple of years that I was forced to leave due to a wrist injury. This ended up being the impetus for me to start focusing on my illustration and textile design driven by my own trend research and personal taste for fun and exciting patterns that break the mold.

Additionally, I publish a yearly mini magazine called Hazel, which is a fully illustrated lifestyle zine for young witches in training, featuring recipes, crafts, articles, and comics. I love to work on imaginative projects from storyboarding to designing textile collections.

Now that I’m back living and working in Raleigh, North Carolina, I still feel free to work periodically in the greater NYC & Philadelphia area, which I love so much, and I will be working on projects in all three areas this year.
